The WorldSkills Malaysia Belia (WSMB) IoT Bootcamp 2026 was successfully conducted from 30 March to 2 April 2026. Organized by the Department of Skills Development (JPK) under the Ministry of Human Resources (MoHR), the event served as a critical intensive training ground for the finalists of the WSMB Internet of Things (IoT) category. The bootcamp was led by Prof. Ts. Dr. Tew Yiqi, the appointed National Expert in IoT, whose extensive experience includes leading the Malaysian team to WorldSkills ASEAN in 2018, 2023, and 2025. This high-level consultation and training aimed to sharpen the technical competencies of participants in preparation for national and international skill competitions.
The bootcamp saw the participation of top-tier finalists and their respective coaches from several esteemed institutions, including Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA (KKTM) Petaling Jaya, German-Malaysian Institute (GMI), and Institut Kemahiran MARA (IKM) Lumut and Sungai Petani. The curriculum focused on advanced IoT architecture, utilizing ESP32 and Raspberry Pi embedded systems. Participants engaged in complex tasks involving sensor-actuator integration via MQTT protocols and the development of sophisticated dashboards using Node-RED frameworks.
TAR UMT demonstrated a strong presence with the involvement of four teams consisting of eight students from the Diploma in Computer Science and Bachelor of Software Engineering programs. The student representatives included Cham Herman, Jeff Wong Wei Quan, Liew Jie Er, Wong Yan Thong, Tan Wy Hang, Tan Ying Nan, Wong Yoke Ting, and Aiman Dinie Bin Ahmad Faizal Sim. Under the coach guidance of Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (FOCS) staff members, Mr. Wong Wai Zhong and Ms. Joan Hau, the students successfully navigated rigorous technical challenges designed to simulate real-world industrial scenarios.
A significant highlight of the bootcamp was the industrial IoT test project, which utilized four specialized YL-73B machines provided by Yalong. This equipment was made available through the support of Advance Retro Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. As the YL-73B model is the designated equipment for WorldSkills ASEAN 2025 in Philippines and upcoming 2027 in Indonesia, the bootcamp provided TAR UMT students and other finalists with invaluable hands-on experience. This collaboration between academia, government bodies, and industry partners underscores TAR UMT’s commitment to excellence in technical education and its pivotal role in developing Malaysia's future digital workforce.
