A total of 138 Year 3 students pursuing the Bachelor in Information Technology (Honours) (Information Security) from Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) attended an insightful industry guest lecture titled "The Future of Security Assessment in the Era of Artificial Intelligence" delivered by Mr Jeffrey Low, Senior Cyber Security Consultant from LGMS Berhad. Organised for students currently enrolled in the BMIT3123 Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing (VAPT) course, the session highlighted the rapidly changing landscape of cybersecurity.
The presentation outlined the evolution of penetration testing, moving from manual, checklist-driven testing in the classical era to automated agentic AI capabilities today. Key takeaways emphasised that while AI tools offer speed, continuous scanning, and non-stop operational efficiency, deep technical fundamentals remain crucial. Students learned that AI is best utilised as a powerful tool rather than a full operator, and understanding underlying protocols, networks, and tools is essential to evaluate AI-generated outputs effectively.
The speaker also addressed emerging threats, such as AI-powered social engineering, deepfakes, and automated exploit development, urging future security professionals to learn faster than attackers by mastering prompt engineering and controlling AI deployment. Additionally, practical career guidance was shared regarding industry certifications like OSCP, CREST, and CISSP, alongside the shifting economics of security assessments.
The engaging session left students well-equipped to navigate the future of VAPT, emphasising that success lies in leveraging AI for enhanced productivity while maintaining strong accountability and technical expertise.
