TAR UMT Delegates Engaged in High-Level Problem Solving and International Academic Collaboration at UTAR Sungai Long
The International-National Mathematics Competition (I-NMC) 2026 was successfully held on 20th June 2026 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Sungai Long Campus. Jointly organized by the UTAR Mathematics Society and Tunghai University, the full-day national event brought together around 200 high school, college, and university participants across Malaysia to cultivate mathematical interest, foster critical thinking, and strengthen collaborative ties between higher education institutions. Representing Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), a delegate group of seven ambitious students competed across multiple contest categories, showcasing exceptional analytical acumen, creative problem-solving skills, and commendable teamwork on a competitive platform.
The 2026 edition of I-NMC featured a robust, multi-tiered structure designed to test various dimensions of mathematical ability. The competition was divided into three distinct categories: Category X (Mathketeers), a team-based challenge featuring ten subjective open-ended problems that permitted group discussion and calculator usage; Category Y (Theory of Everything), an individual computer-based module comprising twenty comprehensive multiple-choice questions covering diverse mathematical domains without calculators; and Category Z (Running Math), an intense individual speed test consisting of 100 fast-paced operations designed to challenge mental agility under strict time constraints. Additionally, participants competing across all three categories qualified for prestigious aggregate awards, including the Ironmath Trophy for top university performers and the UTTU Trophy, established to honor the institutional collaboration between UTAR and Tunghai University.
The TAR UMT contingent fielded two dedicated teams alongside individual entries to tackle the diverse challenges. The first team, led by team leader Man Zi Qing together with team members Lim See Liang and Cho Chun Wei, demonstrated admirable coordination and analytical rigor throughout the group-based paper exam and individual tests. Similarly, the second team, under the leadership of Lim Jun Cieh alongside Teoh Yie Xun and Selina Teo Jin Suen, displayed strong problem-solving synergy and resilience in navigating the complex open-ended problems of Category X. Adding to the institution's strong presence, Anny Wong Ann Nee represented TAR UMT as an individual competitor in Category Y (Theory of Everything), demonstrating keen quantitative discipline and sharp problem-solving focus.
Participating in I-NMC 2026 provided TAR UMT students with invaluable exposure to real-world mathematical reasoning, high-pressure problem solving, and inter-university academic exchange. Beyond testing technical mathematical skills, the experience nurtured crucial soft skills, including structured critical thinking, team collaboration, and adaptability under time constraints. The event concluded with a commemorative group photo session, leaving participants inspired to further pursue mathematical excellence.
