On 27 July 2026, the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (FOCS), Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), organized a community service workshop on NotebookLM for approximately 70 teachers from SJK(C) Mun Yee, Kuala Lumpur. The workshop was held at the school's STEAM Studio from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and adopted a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) concept, enabling participants to gain hands-on experience on their own devices.
The programme was directed and coordinated by Mr. Ooi Chun Pew, Deputy Dean of FOCS, with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Goh Ching Pang who served as the key facilitator and supported by a team of FOCS academic as well as administrative staff. The workshop introduced participants to the fundamentals of NotebookLM, guided them through its interface, and provided practical experience in effective prompting, productivity-enhancing plugins, and complementary AI tools. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, and learning materials were shared to facilitate continued application.
Through this community service initiative, FOCS aimed to introduce emerging AI technologies to school teachers, equipping them with practical skills to integrate into their daily teaching. By empowering educators to confidently adopt AI tools like NotebookLM, the faculty promoted meaningful knowledge transfer from higher education to schools while encouraging the responsible application of AI inside and outside the classroom. This initiative also fostered AI literacy among educators, helping them prepare younger generations with the digital skills and critical thinking needed to thrive in a technology-driven world.
This programme reflects the faculty’s ongoing commitment to community engagement through digital innovation. By partnering with local schools, FOCS creates a multiplier effect where knowledge shared with teachers is subsequently passed on to hundreds of students, amplifying the initiative's long-term educational impact.
