The Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (FOCS) recently organized an insightful industry talk titled "Career Path of an ERP System Consultant," attended by approximately 250 students. The session was specifically targeted at Diploma (DFT) students preparing for their upcoming internships in February 2026, as well as Year 2 students exploring future specializations.
We were honored to have Mr. Hong Gek Yeow, Founder of Fast Track SBOi Sdn Bhd, as the guest speaker. With extensive industry experience, Mr. Hong provided a comprehensive roadmap for students interested in the dynamic world of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP).
Navigating the Ladder: From Analyst to Architect Mr. Hong guided the students through the typical progression of an ERP career, breaking it down into achievable milestones:
The Starting Line: Fresh graduates typically enter as Junior Analysts or Specialists, where the primary focus is mastering specific ERP platforms such as SAP or Oracle.
Growth C Mentorship: As professionals gain expertise, they advance to Senior Consultant roles. At this stage, responsibilities expand to managing project streams, becoming Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and mentoring junior staff.
Leadership: The career path culminates in high-level roles such as Solution Architect—designing high-level technical strategies—or Project/Program Manager, overseeing large-scale system implementations.
The talk provided students with a clear vision of what to expect in the industry, bridging the gap between academic theory and real-world application. It was particularly valuable for final-year diploma students looking to align their internship choices with their career ambitions.
The event was successfully coordinated by the organizing committee, led by Mr. Low Choon Keat (Lecturer, Cloud Computing), Ms. Choon Kwai Mooi (Programme Leader), and Ms. Kong Hooi Ming (Associate Dean).
