Manila, Philippines – August 28, 2025 – Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) has once again demonstrated its academic prowess and dedication to fostering top-tier talent at the WorldSkills ASEAN 2025 competition, held from August 26th to 28th at the World Trade Center (WTC) Manila. Our exceptional students secured prestigious medals in highly competitive categories, bringing immense pride to the university and Malaysia.
The Cybersecurity category saw an outstanding performance by Wang Teng Zheng, a dedicated student from the Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) in Information Security programme, who clinched the coveted Gold Medal, with his partner from UniKL-MIIT. Their victory is a testament to the rigorous training, deep understanding of complex cyber threats, and their ability to execute sophisticated security protocols under pressure.
In the equally challenging Internet of Things (IoT) category, the dynamic duo of Ang Wen Yee and Yong Qiao Rou, both promising Bachelor of Software Engineering (Honours) programme students, secured the well-deserved Silver Medal. Their innovative approach, technical proficiency in IoT development, and seamless teamwork impressed the judges, highlighting TAR UMT's strength in this rapidly evolving field.
While Leong Ka Yin, who competed in the Web Technology category, earned a Certificate of Participation. He demonstrated commendable effort and dedication throughout the competition. His journey is an inspiration to all aspiring young professionals and a reminder of the valuable experience gained from competing at such a high level.
The success of our students is a direct reflection of the commitment and expertise of our faculty and coaches. The university’s experts played a crucial role in the competition, contributing to the high standards of WorldSkills ASEAN. Ts Lim Mei Shyan, an esteemed expert in Cybersecurity, and Assoc Prof Ts Dr Tew Yiqi, a distinguished expert in IoT, actively participated alongside other ASEAN country experts. Their collaborative efforts were instrumental in formulating the challenging test projects and assessment scopes for their respective categories, ensuring a fair and rigorous evaluation of all competitors.
Behind every successful competitor is a team of dedicated coaches. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the coaches who meticulously prepared our students for this intense competition. For Cybersecurity, TAR UMT alumni: Mr Wong Yik Han provided invaluable guidance and training, honing Cybersecurity team’s skills to perfection. In the IoT category, Mr Wong Wai Zhong and Ms Joan Hau tirelessly worked with Ang Wen Yee and Yong Qiao Rou for five months, equipping them with the necessary technical and problem-solving skills to excel.
The extensive six-month training period for both categories was meticulously designed to equip the students with cutting-edge knowledge and hands-on experience, preparing them for the real-world challenges presented at WorldSkills. This rigorous preparation, combined with the students' innate talent and dedication, proved to be a winning formula.

Their success at WorldSkills ASEAN 2025 not only highlights their individual brilliance but also underscores TAR UMT's commitment to producing highly skilled and industry-ready graduates. Overall, Malaysia's contingent participated in 23 out of 32 categories, concluding the event with an impressive haul of 13 Gold, 4 Silver, 3 Bronze, and 2 Medallions for Excellence. TAR UMT is proud to have contributed to this outstanding national achievement.
